Beaver Street Bridge Project

The recently completed Beaver Street Bridge was part of this 1993 state project.Rep. Stanley has some nerve blaming the Mayor for this state project that he never delivered on!
The long-awaited project to improve flood-prone Beaver Brook received a boost this week when the State House of Representatives included $8.5 million for the work in its Environmental Bond Bill plan.

While the Beaver Brook project has cleared a major hurdle, money has yet to be allocated for the work. It’s up to the governor to choose which projects will receive the money and when.

In Rep. Stanley’s own words to the News Tribune:

“I think it’s very good news that money was earmarked for this project,” said Stanley

News Tribune, June 27, 2002

“The project is not likely to start until a new governor replaces Romney, who is not seeking re-election in November, said State Rep. Thomas M. Stanley.” “I think his attention is elsewhere.”

A Rep. since 2001 (15 years) with 8 years of a Democratic Governor (2007 - 2015) and still no results/money from Rep. Stanley.

Mayor Jeannette McCarthy

The city completed the Beaver Street Bridge/Culvert replacement* and is working on putting out to bid the next component of this 1993 state project – Linden & Massasoit Streets/Culverts.

Was it a pain for all? YES!

Scope of project:

Put out to bid; award bid; get state approval of contractor, design bridge, culvert and wingwalls; obtain state DOT (Dept. of Transportation) approval for bridge design and traffic plan; obtain approvals from state DCR (Dept. of Conservation and Recreation) Army Corps of Engineers and local Conservation Commission for work in Beaver Brook; get state inspections done during construction; relocate and abandon major gas line next to culvert (neighborhood gas lines had to be updated which took months, then line leaked so more delays); active railroad required specialized training for contractor; overhead wires in culvert area; relocate city’s water and sewer mains in Culvert; build diversion pipe on both sides of culvert; install culvert; install wingwalls; dismantle diversion pipes; install sidewalk; pave; have DOT do final inspection and clean site. Active brook, bad winter and high water complicated project.
In response to citizens complaints, Mayor requested and received (Oct. 2013) city money to design bridge and sidewalks. The City Engineer requested in July 2014 and again in August 2014 an inspection of the bridge by DOT. State inspected Bridge on 9/3/14. Inspection report received 9/15/14. Initially state closed bridge to truck traffic. Then on 9/24/14 bridge was restricted to one way traffic only. Bridge was closed for 6 days completely. Bridge opened in May 5, 2015.

Lyman Street Bridge

In contrast to Beaver St. Bridge, when the state rebuilt the Lyman Street Culvert Bridge, the state paid for the project and the bridge was closed in both lanes and in both directions from June 16, 1999 to the end of September 1999.
Waltham has and needs a Mayor who delivers and not one who hasn’t delivered, but wants you to believe he has.
